Know about PCB and learn the way of fabricating it

  • Single-Sided– You can find FR4 base in these single-sided circuit boards. The rigid woven glass material is applied for them. The engineers use copper coating for one of the sides. The thickness level of this coating may be variable, based on your application. 
  • Double-Sided– The base material is similar to that of the single-sided PCBs. However, the major difference is in the presence of coating on two sides of your board.
  • Multilayer– You can note the difference in the coating. The engineers do not apply copper coating. They focus on using the copper foil for creating this board. The foil can be the best choice for making layers. The professionals use the foil and the base material alternatively for developing several layers.

Various elements common to a Printed Circuit Board

 Substrate- In most cases, the engineers use fiberglass as the substrate, and it is effective in making the PCB much stronger. To make the structure breakage-resistant, this is the best substrate for your PCB.

Layer of copper- The type of your board is the major factor to the engineers. The engineers choose copper coating or foil for creating this layer. However, you can find that copper is common to all. It helps in transmitting electrical signals from and to PCB.

Mask- A polymer layer forms a solder mask for your PCB. It gives protection to copper for preventing the risk ofshort-circuit. Thus, the mask works as a skin of PCB.

Silkscreen- It is another part, related to PCB. It is present at the component section of your PCB. You can find symbols, logos, numbers and component reference at that part.

Creating the design for PCB

For PCB Manufacturing, the fabricator chooses a reliable pcb design software application. This software encores all the details, including the particular amount of masts, component notation and the number of layers. The fabricator also checks all the design aspects to keep away from any error.

Then, he sends the finished design to the fabrication house.

Print the design of PCB

For the interior PCB layers, there are inks of two colors. The clear one indicates the board’s non-conductive part. The black ink is applicable for PCB’s circuits and copper traces. The solder mask with each of the layers has separate film. Thus, when it is a 2-layer PCB, there will be 4 sheets.

Printing and etching the copper to develop internal layer

After printing the design on a laminated piece, the manufacturers etch away the pre-bonded copper. They cover this laminate panel with a film, known as resist. After preparing the board rightly, they wash it with alkaline solution.

Alignment of the layers

When all the layers of PCB are clean, the professionals start aligning them. The pre-made holes enable them in aligning the outer and inner layers. By using a punch machine, the engineers align these layers.

Then, they pass the PCB for an inspection process.

Lamination of the layers

The professionals prepare the inner and outer layers, and they use metal clamp for bonding those layers. The certified technicians deal with the process of lamination by applying pre-coated resin. They press together PCB layers and take the top place out of it.

They drill the plate and start the plating procedure. For this process, they apply the chemicals, which are effective in fusing the PCB layers. They fill the holes using copper, and by doing it, they cover all the pre-drilled holes.

Other steps for PCB design and fabrication includes etching process. During this process, the fabricators remove the part of copper that is not essential. After this removal, they make it prepared for applying solder mask. Now, at the last step, they use silver or gold for plating PCB. Silk-screening is also another relevant process for printing the details on PCB.
